Successful Surgical Repair of a Distal Biceps Tendon Rupture in a Professional Bodybuilder
Dr. Saad Al-Shammari, Consultant in Orthopedic Surgery, Joint Replacement, and Sports Injuries, successfully performed surgery to repair a complete distal biceps tendon rupture in a 36-year-old professional bodybuilder.
The patient presented to the Emergency Department after sustaining a sudden injury while exercising, resulting in a complete rupture of the distal biceps tendon at the elbow. Given the tendon’s important role in elbow flexion and forearm rotation, particularly for athletes, the case was managed promptly. Clinical examinations and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were performed to confirm the diagnosis, assess the degree of tendon retraction, and support precise surgical planning.
Following a comprehensive evaluation, surgery was performed to restore the tendon to its anatomical position and secure it to the radius using the EndoButton technique, a fixation method used to reattach the tendon to the bone. The procedure aimed to restore tendon stability and function and support the gradual recovery of strength and movement through a structured postoperative rehabilitation program.
The surgery was successfully completed, and the patient’s condition remained stable following the procedure. He was discharged from the hospital in good condition with a follow-up and gradual rehabilitation program, with a return to sports activity planned according to the appropriate stages of recovery.
