Successful Surgical Intervention to Preserve Kidney Function in a 29-Month-Old Child
The medical team at Almana Hospital Aziziah Dammam successfully performed a delicate surgical intervention for a 29-month-old child who had been suffering since birth from narrowing at the junction between the renal pelvis and ureter. The condition had significantly affected the function of his right kidney. The child also experienced failure to thrive, recurrent abdominal pain, fever, and urinary tract infections, resulting in multiple hospital admissions and emergency treatments.
The child arrived with his parents at Almana Hospital Aziziah Dammam on July 14. Following comprehensive examinations and clinical assessment, the medical team determined that the congenital narrowing had significantly compromised the function of the right kidney, requiring surgical intervention to relieve the obstruction, preserve the kidney, and prevent further deterioration in its function.
Dr. Fouad Alkawai, Consultant Pediatric Urologist, explained that the child underwent a thorough assessment before the most appropriate intervention was determined. The surgical procedure, potential risks, and expected outcomes were discussed with the parents, with the aim of relieving the obstruction and giving the affected kidney an opportunity to improve and preserve its function.
The child underwent careful preoperative preparation. During the procedure, the medical team utilized advanced technologies and surgical instruments, including intraoperative ultrasound, a modern flexible ureteroscope, and surgical magnifying loupes, supporting greater precision throughout the procedure and allowing the team to address the specific requirements of the case.
The surgery was successfully completed, with integrated efforts from the Pediatric Urology, Anesthesia, and Pediatrics teams. The child continues to recover under medical follow-up, with ongoing assessment of kidney function and response to the surgical intervention.
This case highlights the importance of early diagnosis and follow-up of congenital urinary tract abnormalities in children to help reduce complications and preserve kidney function. It also reflects the multidisciplinary expertise and advanced medical and surgical capabilities available across Almana Hospitals Group to provide appropriate care for pediatric cases requiring precise surgical interventions.
