The Neurosurgery Department team at Almana Hospital Dammam successfully saved the life of a 13-year-old boy who arrived in a critical condition, suffering from severe headache, continuous seizures, and difficulty speaking.
Advanced diagnostic imaging, including CT scan and MRI with contrast, revealed a serious abscess beneath the brain’s covering membrane, pressing on the right side of the brain, caused by a severe fungal sinus infection leading to encephalitis, brain edema, and septicemia.
Due to the rapid deterioration of the child’s condition, an urgent craniotomy was performed by the Neurosurgery team, in collaboration with the ENT Department and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), to remove the abscess while preserving healthy brain tissue. Sinus debridement revealed Aspergillus infection, after which targeted antifungal therapy was provided.
Thanks to the team’s swift intervention, multidisciplinary coordination, and medical expertise, the child made a full recovery — regaining consciousness and mobility — and was discharged in stable condition with a preventive treatment plan.
