Neurology

Neurology is a Medical Speciality that deals with disorders of the Brain, Spinal Cord, Muscles and Nerves.

The Neurology Department deals with a range of neurological disease.
These include:

Scope and Services:

A variety of Laboratory tests are available in the Hospital to evaluate neurological diseases. These include:

ELECTROPHYSIOLOGICAL TESTS
These include:

a). Electro Encephalogram– A non – invasive Brain-wave testing procedure for recording brain activity(similar to the cardiogram for the heart). Most patients with seizures, dizzy, fainting attacks or epilepsy require EEG for further evaluation.

b). Electro Myography:

Including nerve conduction studies, a procedure for testing the integrity and function of the nerves and muscles.

It tests the electrical signals in the nerves and muscles. Myopathy, Muscle, Dystropy, many types of Paralysis, Neuropathies, nerves injuries and Myasthenia need to have this procedure for verifying the diagnosis.

It involves Electrical Stimuation of the nerves and muscle: at times needle examination may also be required.
Patients may rest assured that these test do not carry any Radiation Hazards or transmission of Hepatitis.

c). Evoked Potential: Performed in some neurological and neuro ophthalmologic disease, these tests are also non-invasive and can test the integrity of the optic pathway system (V.E.R or V.E.P) and Brain Stem Auditory pathway system (BAER).

They are important diagnostic tools in the investigations of many neurological disease, mainly in Optic Neuritis, Retrobulbar Neuritis and Multiple Sclerosis Suspects.

d). Neuro Imaging studies are one of the most important groups of Radiology investigations. They include CT Scan, MRI Scan and also Doppler Studies.

The CT scan, MRI Scan procedures are important tools for investigating different types of Brain, Eye and Spinal disorders. Contrast injection studies for CT Scan and MRI Scan may be needed:

e). Lumbar Puncture for Cerebro Spinal Fluid (CSF)examination and drainage may be indicated in some infective and inflammatory Neurological disease. Usually involves a one-night admission.

A spinal injection administered under local anesthesia.

The CSF can be tested for different neurological disorders, in which no other modality can yield information for reaching a diagnosis.

f). Botulinum Toxin Injection Treatment:
Botulinum Toxin injection has newly evolved as treatment for some neuromuscular and movement disorders. These include:
