General Pediatric

The health of the child is of utmost importance to parents. The Paediatric Department ensures that your child is cared for by specialists with a combination of knowledge, experience and understanding both for the sick child and the anxious parents.

Helpful paediatric staffs are always on hand to answer questions regarding your child’s health enabling you to give your child the comfort and support he needs during his hospital stay.

The Paediatric Department comprises:

• General Paediatric Ward
• Paediatric Extended Care Unit (PECU)
• Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU)
• Newborn Nursery
• OPD Clinics

General Paediatric Ward:

The ward consists of Private and Semi-private rooms. There are facilities for a parent, usually the mother, to stay 24hrs with her child.

There are 10 pediatric beds and 2 ventilators. A Treatment Room is available for procedures such as insertion of IV line, Lumbar Puncture etc

Scope of Services:

Medical:

• All common pediatric medical conditions especially Asthma and other respiratory diseases which are prevalent in the Eastern Province
• Sickle Cell and other blood related diseases
• Diabetes
• Common Childhood diseases
• All acute and chronic diseases of childhood

Surgical:

An experienced Paediatric Surgeon addresses all general elective and emergency general surgical paediatric cases. Orthopedic, Ear, Nose & Throat and Dental procedures are provides for by experienced Surgeons

Prevention:

• Regular Growth and Development Check-Ups (OPD Clinics
• Strong Immunization Programme (OPD Clinics)

Pediatric Extended Care Unit (PECU)

The PECU is a special ward to care for children who are totally dependent on 24 hours complete skilled nursing care and who cannot survive within the family unit in the home. Many of the conditions are due to congenital abnormalities, near drowning as well as serious injuries sustained from road traffic and other accidents.
The Ward comprises

• 20 beds
• 13 of which are fully equipped with mechanical ventilation.

There is a family atmosphere to encourage growth and development and families are encouraged to participate in their child’s care.

Scope of Services:

• Available treatments for the conditions presenting
• Mechanical Ventilation
• Caring for all activities of daily living
• Oral, Nasogastric and Parenteral Nutrition
• Respiratory Therapy
• Physical Therapy
• All laboratory and radiological investigations required
• Social and psychological support to patients and families

Newborn Nursery (NBN) 

The NBN is designed to care for all well newborns. It contains 13 baby cots, 2 incubators, 5 phototherapy units to treat neonatal jaundice and 3 radiant warmers.

Care provided includes:

• Routine newborn admission procedures
• Care of all activities of daily living
• Ensuring body temperature is maintained
• Initiating feeding if not already done in Labour Ward
• Encouragement of breast feeding and assisting mothers in doing so
• Baby Bathing
• Baby bath demonstration, especially to first mothers
• Vital signs observation
• Phototherapy for neonatal jaundice
• Circumcision care
• Cord Care
• Care of babies undergoing phototherapy

Immunization before discharge:

•  BCG
•  Hepatitis B

Hours of Operation:

Saturday - Thursday (08:00 am - 12:00 pm & 04:00 pm - 08:00 pm
