Neurology

Neurology is a specialized branch of medicine dealing with disorders of the Brain, Spinal Cord, Muscles and Nerves.

These disorders and diseases include Stroke, Epilepsy, Parkinson’s Disease etc. The department also investigates and manages Headaches, Migraine, Vertigo, Multiple Sclerosis, Encephalitis and Meningitis.
Various movement disorders are investigated, diagnosed and treated including Chorea, Dystonia, Parkinsonism and Ataxias.
Many types of Myopathies, Myotonias and other muscle disease, Peripheral Neuropathy and different types of Dementias are evaluated.

SCOPE OF SERVICES:

Some of the Laboratory tests available:

ELECTROPHYSIOLOGICAL TESTS

A. Electro Encephalogram – a non-invasive Brain-wave testing procedure in which a paper recording of brain activity is obtained (similar to Cardiogram for the heart). Most patients with seizures, dizziness, fainting attacks or epilepsy require EEG for further understanding of the nature of such attacks. It is a safe procedure for all ages including the pregnant woman. It is completed in I – 1 ½ hours.

B. Nerve Conduction study: It is a procedure for testing integrity and function of the nerves. This too, like the EEG, is a safe procedure. It tests the electrical signals in the nerves. Diseases like neuropathies, nerve injuries, and myasthenia require this procedure for verification of the diagnosis. It involves Electrical Stimulation of the nerves and muscle: at times needle examination may also be required. Patients may rest assured that these tests do not carry any Radiation Hazards.

C. Evoked Potential: Performed in some neurological and Neuro ophthalmological disease, these tests are also non-invasive and can test the integrity of the optic pathway system (V.E.R. or V.E.P.) and Brain Stem Auditory pathway system (BAER).

D. Neuro Imaging studies are one of the most important groups of Radiology investigations. They include CT Scan, MRI Scan and also Doppler studies.

The CT and MRI Scan procedures are vitally important tools in investigating different types of Brain, Eye and Spinal disorders. At times, contrast injection studies for CT and MRI Scan may be needed. MR Angiography and Doppler Studies assist the Neurologist in identifying circulatory disease of the brain.

Besides these investigations and Laboratory findings, the Neurological Department also works in close liaison and interaction with other allied departments of Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, Cardiology, Internal Medicine, Neurosurgery etc., in appropriate situations.

E. Lumbar Puncture for Cero-spinal Fluid (CSF) examination and drainage, where indicated in various infective and inflammatory Neurological diseases. Usually, this involves a one – night admission. A spinal injection will be administered under local anaesthesia. The CSF can be tested for different neurological disorders for which no other modality can yield such specific information for an accurate diagnosis.
