Endoscopy

ENDOSCOPY DEPARTMENT

The Gastroenterology service has the facilities to diagnose and treat all major diseases of the liver, esophagus, stomach, small intestine and colon.

Among the common diseases of the liver are: hepatitis B, hepatitis C, fatty liver and cirrhosis. Heart burn, reflux, peptic ulcer and gastritis are considered common problems of the upper gut. On the other hand, those related to lower gut include irritable bowel syndrome, gas, constipation, diarrhea, ulcerative colitis, Crohns disease, colon polyps and cancer. Bleeding from the stomach or from the rectum are considered top emergencies, and are dealt with over 24 hours.

The service includes:

• Out patient clinic opens Saturday – Thursday 1600 hrs – 2000 hrs.
• Endoscopy Unit opens Saturday –Thursday 0900 hrs – 1200 hrs.

The endoscopy unit offers the following services:

Diagnostic:

• Upper gastro intestinal endoscopy: Examination of the esophagus, stomach end duodenum.
• Colonoscopy: examination of the colon.

Therapeutic:

- Endoscopic treatment of bleeding:

• Injection for hemostasis for bleeding ulcers
• Variceal sclerotherapy for bleeding varices
• Variceal band ligation for bleeding varices

- Endoscopic Polypectomy : Removal of gastric and colonic polyps by endoscopy.
- Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube placement and replacement for feeding in patients who can not have their nutrition by mouth.
- The following facilities are being planned to be available in the near future:

• Heat probing for hemostasis of bleeding lesions.
• Clipping for hemostasis
• Esophageal stenting for narrow esophagus.
• ERCP diagnostic and therapeutic for jaundice due to obstructed bile duct.

All patients are given the maximum professional care during endoscopy, dealt with confidentiality to respect their privacy. Much attention is given for comfortable and pain free procedure. A high standard of disinfection is followed.

The Endoscopy unit includes 2 procedure rooms, 3 recovery rooms and 4 patient rooms. 
 It includes: 

• 3 UGI scopes
     Pentax EG2940 (1) 
     Pentax EG2985 (2) 
•1 colonoscope
     Pentax EC 3840L (1) 
•Disinfection machine: Manual disinfector TD20
• Heliprobe machine for urea breath test of Helicobacter pylori 
• All accessories are available
