Psychiatric

Scope of Service

This Psychiatric Department provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care to acute and broad spectrum of psychiatric disorders patients. Treatment is rendered to male as well as female patient by this department in separate units / section. Male unit is situated on third floor, and female unit is situated on second floor. Male psychiatric unit has two main entrances. Female psychiatric unit has one entrance. Both units are always kept lock from inside and key in handled by senior staff nurse. This is to prevent elopement of patient. Male psychiatric unit has fourteen (14) bed capacities and female psychiatric unit has ten (10) bed capacities. Both units are divided into two portions with lock. Male units outer portion contains six (6) rooms and inner portion has two (2) rooms. Outer portion rooms are used for mild, settled and controlled patient. Both units have seclusion room facility with all types of safety measures applied and maintained. These seclusion rooms are used for management of aggressive, violent and hostile patients. On both unit safety precautionary measures are always maintained. Male psychiatric unit has smoking room facility for the patient who wants to smoke under the observation of a staff nurse.

The emphasis is a multidisciplinary approach to individual patient care with intensive treatment and reintegration back into the family or community, with high performing multidisciplinary service, with interdisciplinary team consisting of two consultants, specialist psychiatrist, clinical psychologist, social worker and nursing staff.

Types of Patients Served

This unit provides treatment for the acute and chronic mentally ill adult male and female above fourteen (14) years old patients.

Range of Conditions and Diagnoses Treated

Services provide treatment for typical diagnosis, major depression, bipolar disorders, obsessive disorders, schizoaffective disorders, schizophrenia, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, psychosomatic disorders, personality disorders and organic psychotic disorder.

Range of Treatments or Activities Performed

The unit provides comprehensive psychiatric services with wide range of mental health from routine stress reaction to seriously mentally ill complex personality disorder, psychotic disorders, depressive disorders and Patients who are aggressive or having violent behavior and at risk of self harming or harming others. They are well treated and managed with strictest or increased level of observation by providing safe, secure and therapeutic environment. To manage such aggressive patients at times unit staff uses code “ Mr. Strong” procedure. This facility is to get more manpower / help from other units to control his behavior. For this types of patient chemical restraints are also used.

Unit provides bio-feed back therapy and relaxation therapy, which will be carried out by the clinical psychologist. Unit provides psycho-therapy which includes all generally accepted methods of brief or long term therapy, specifically individual therapy, family therapy, insight-oriented therapy, cognitive therapy, behavioral and interpersonal therapy.

Psychiatric services are carrying out two special procedures i.e. Abreaction and Electroconvulsive therapy for therapeutic use.

Patients who are requiring care and consultation other than psychiatric care i.e. medical, surgical, orthopedic, ophthalmic, dental, derma or as per patients necessity, will be referred to specialist through referral contact.

Routine and emergency psychiatric care and treatment is given on twenty-four basis.

Supportive services like laboratory, x-ray, dietician, physiotherapy, infection control, pain and wound management, patient and family educator, diabetic educator, etc. are providing care directly or through referral contacts.

Emergency services, such as cardio-pulmonary resuscitation is provided by hospital code blue team. Fire and safety unit also provides services in emergency situations.

Types of Staff Carrying Out these Activities

The whole Psychiatric unit is consisting of consultant psychiatrists, specialist psychiatrist, clinical psychologist and a social worker. For the Male Psychiatric Ward we have the male staff nurses and for the Female Psychiatric Ward we have the female staff nurses. Both Wards are headed by a Unit Charge Nurse.

In case if the unit demands more staff as unit census is more or unit is busy due to levels of observation increased then the Charge Nurse coordinates with on-duty Nursing Supervisor to get help from other units if possible or the Unit Charge Nurse calls off- duty nurses to fulfill the demand of the unit.

Male psychiatric unit has recreational area for play therapy with indoor games like baby foot, table tennis, carom board, Arabic games like tawla, dominos, snake and ladder and play cards. Ward staff supervises all these activities.

Psychiatric services are provided both by inpatient and outpatient basis. Our regular clinic times covers from 0800 hours – 1200 hours and 1600 hours – 2000 hours from Saturday to Thursday.

Psychiatric department provides twenty-four hours psychiatric emergency services including voluntary and involuntary admissions through emergency room by on-call psychiatrist.

Saturday - Thursday (08:00 am - 12:00 pm & 04:00 pm - 08:00 pm
