Scope of Service

Types of Patients Served

The Department of Pediatric provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment services for children of all ages. Aimed at promoting optimal wellness from birth to thirteen (13) years, our certified Pediatricians and the entire nursing staff share a sense of duty and enthusiasm towards our goal to keep our children healthy and happy within a caring and friendly atmosphere.

Range of Conditions/ Diagnoses Treated and Range of Activities/ Procedures Performed

NEWBORN NURSERY (NBN)

The NBN is designed to care for all well newborns. It contains baby cots, incubators, phototherapy units to treat neonatal jaundice and radiant warmers.

Care provided includes: routine newborn admission procedures, care of all activities of daily living, ensuring body temperature is maintained, initiating feeding if not yet done in the Labour & Delivery Unit, encouragement of breast feeding and assisting mothers in doing so, baby bathing, baby bath demonstrations especially for first mothers, vital signs observation, phototherapy for neonatal jaundice, care of babies undergoing phototherapy, circumcision care, cord care, and immunization for BCG and Hepatitis B before discharge.

SPECIAL CARE BABY UNIT (SCBU)

SCBU is a specialized unit to care for babies from birth who require intensive care. Many of these babies will be mechanically ventilated or need intensive nursing in an incubator. The main reason for admission to this unit are:

• Prematurity (babies must be 25 weeks gestation or more and weigh at least 500gms at birth)
• fetal distress
• respiratory distress syndrome
• and any other maternal condition or disease that resulted in the newborn being unable to cope without intensive support.

 The unit possesses ventilator machines, incubators and transport incubator/ ventilator.

Services offered are:

• All aspects of ventilatory support including mechanical ventilation, oxygen delivered in an incubator and nasal, facial or head box oxygen delivery.
• Any other systems requiring support, e.g. renal or cardiac
• Protection from and treatment of infection
• Body heat regulation
• Nutrition
• Initiation of oral feeds
• Blood transfusions
• Intravenous therapy
• Phototherapy
• Physical and Respiratory Therapy
• Any other services required until the baby, if his condition allows, to be able to function independently without intensive support

PEDIATRIC WARD

Our Pediatric Ward is open 24 hours and provides on going primary care for children. The ward is considerably involved and work in close collaboration with the following departments in caring for their pediatric patients: Surgery, Cardiology, Orthopedics, E.N.T., Opthalmology, Anesthesia and Radiology.

Types of Staff Carrying Out these Activities

A Consultant Pediatrician leads the Department with other pediatric consultants and residents. They are supported by the nursing staffs from Nursery (which includes NICU & SCBU), Pediatric Ward and in the General Pediatric Clinics.

Sites and Time of Care/ Services are Provided

General Pediatric Clinics are located in the left side corner before entering the OPD Reception Area. It provides an on-going care for both consultation and primary pediatric care which is open 6 days a week, Saturday to Thursday from 0800 hours-1200 hours and 1600 hours - 2000 hours.

Nursery (including NICU & SCBU) and Pediatric Ward is open 24 hours/ 7 days a week and are both located in the Second Floor.

A resident pediatrician is available on on-call coverage 24 hours/ 7 days a week for any emergencies related to their area of specialty.

Saturday - Thursday (08:00 am - 12:00 pm & 04:00 pm - 08:00 pm
