Range of Conditions and Diagnoses Treated

Range of Treatments or Activities Performed

A variety of Laboratory tests are available to evaluate neurological diseases. These include:

        - Routine blood count and Biochemistry
        - Endocrine tests of thyroid, pituitary, adrenal and other hormonal glands
        - Muscle enzymes
        - Lipid profile
        - Acetylcholine receptor antibody, B12 and folate levels

ELECTROPHYSIOLOGICAL TESTS are available in AGH Dammam.

These include:

a) Electro Encephalogram – A non –invasive Brain-wave testing procedure in which a paper recording of brain activity is obtained (similar to cardiogram for the heart) using electrode wires. Most patients with seizures, dizzy, fainting attacks, require EEG for further understanding of the nature of such attacks. It is a safe procedure for all ages including the pregnant woman. It is completed in I-1½ hours.

b) Electro Myography:
Including nerve conduction studies, a procedure for testing integrity and function of the nerves and muscles. This too, like the EEG, is a safe procedure. It tests the electrical signals in the nerves and muscles. Diseases like myopathy, muscle dystrophy, many types of paralysis, neuropathies, nerve injuries, and myasthenia need to have this procedure for confirming the diagnosis. It involves Electrical Stimulation of the nerves and muscle: at times needle examination may also be required. Patients may rest assured that these tests do not carry any Radiation Hazards.

c) Evoked Potential: Performed in some neurological and neuro ophthalmologic disease, these tests are also non-invasive and can test the integrity of the optic pathway system (V.E.R. or V.E.P.) and Brain Stem Auditory pathway system (BAER).

They are important diagnostic tools in many neurological diseases, mainly in Optic Neuritis, Retrobulbar Neuritis and Multiple Sclerosis Suspects.

d) Neuro Imaging studies are one of the most important groups of Radiology investigations. They include CT Scan, MRI Scan and also doppler studies.
The CT Scan, MRI Scan procedures are vitally important tools in investigating Neurology.
